CoS – a short guide to the instance

culling of strat has been simplified and speeded up since a while ago, but ppl are still kinda lost. i ran a regular last night and wiped 3 times, of which only 1 was justified (heals dc). so here’s a short guide. it should work for heroic too.

tip: run this instance in reg at least once so u can complete the quest line from chromie (cute gnome npc, awesome dragon IRL) and never be bothered by it again when u start to chain heroics. well, if u never, you can still skip it. but why get the extra prompt?

1) questline: burn 5 tainted boxes of rice

so first thing on porting to the dungeon is to run up a few ramps to chromie the gnome npc and get the quest. she gives u a zapper and u zap the boxes (1st one just outside the house you exit from) placed outside houses along the road in alternate L-R positions.

once done, mount up and run to chromie to trade for 2nd part of chain quest. then talk to chromie again to summon arthas roleplay sequence. if someone in your party did the shortcut, then u only need to turn in quest and get the 2nd part of chain quest and proceed to join up with the rest of the party in strat.

the 2nd part of chain quest is to kill the end boss of the dungeon. so after the boss is killed, wait for chromie to turn up and then u can turn in the quest.

tip: ppl who already did the quest can just talk to chromie to get the shortcut into strat (skipping the long roleplay with arthas). if u need to do the quest, tell your party so they are understanding. sometimes, they may just leave party cos they are too impatient. hence i say, do it in regular. H run ppl are a lot more impatient.

2) inside strat: 10 waves of mobs. 5th and 10th are mini-boss fights

tank lead the way. follow the mob mark on the mini map. in the past, there was no mark, but because it was a sequenced battle, the tanks memorized the sequence and just ran from wave to wave.

aoe the zombies while running from wave to wave cos otherwise they hit u and slow u down. in H version, there is a timer for an extra boss b4 the end boss which will drop a flying mount – bronze drake. so they run as fast as possible after each wave.

3) house fights (includes a boss at the end of it)

once the 10 waves are cleared, all run to the house at the end of the road and talk to arthas to start the house fights. clear 1 mob on the ground floor, then 3 mobs on top, and then the boss.

talk to arthas again to get him to open door to secret passageway and follow him out of the house

4) street fights (2 parts, as arthas will take a break midway)

talk to arthas outside the house to start the street fights. remember, timer still running in H.

tank should keep up with arthas or be ahead depending on tanking skill and healer capability. else if arthas dies, the whole sequence will reset and u have to clear the whole street again.

H extra boss) kill for EoT and drake (if u havent got it yet)

dont talk to arthas yet. leave him alone on the street and continue to run straight (end boss is on the right) up and engage the extra boss. kill him under the time limit and u get the EoT and someone in your party can roll for the drake.

5) end boss

talk to arthas, then run and turn right to end boss. tank has to turn boss away from party cos he has a frontal cone of dmg. shadow bolts? i forget. but my healer got 1-shotted in reg from that…. so turn the boss away. tank and spank. from time to time, the boss likes to put one party member to sleep. usually the highest dps or the heals. haha. so when we finished the boss fight, someone was dead, lucky not my rogue (then again, his dps was 3rd).

loot the chest and that’s it for the dungeon run.

tip: for those with quest, they have to stay back and wait for chromie to turn in the quest.

kiseki and mib hit 80

following closely on the heels of cavelion, but diff realm, kiseki and mib made the level cap in 1 LFG run.

i even took kiseki to a H run. (not first cos she already ran several Ahune dungeons and so got that nice L232 caster dps cloak but no staff.

i didnt have time to run mib cos i still need to get the head and shoulders enchants (buy with someone who is exalted rep) cos he bought the head and shoulders L232 tier set with his 100 EoTs. kiseki didnt accumulate so many, so i got her the EoT hit rating trinket and wand instead.

finally, the first toon i had turns 80!

cavelion made it to level cap on sunday during a LFG run.

and i guess that is where he will stay for a long long while. i dont have plans to make him into a main since he is on my 2nd account. but i think it’s just a super great feeling when ur toons finally cross the line.

Oculus – a short guide to the instance

this is the H guide but is practically similar to regular. i am writing it cos i realised on some battlegroups, there are still players new to the instance. last night, i ran a regular LFG with a new tank and healer to the instance. and a couple of nights ago, there was a new player to Oculus too.

once in, its a linear path of mobs to clear. then port into 1st boss fight. tank and spank. dps have to keep running away from boss after his magic pulls but even if u dont the healer can probably keep u all up.

once boss is down, 3 npcs appear. for a default run (no achievement), tank takes red/ruby drake, heals is green/emerald and dps is brown/bronze.

initially, all three types of  drakes only have some of their attack powers. for end boss fight they have their full set.

fly up and towards the split in a ring (cant miss it, if not sure, dont fly first, just look up and look for the split). default, most ppl do the dungeon clockwise so land on the left of the split circle.

once all dismounted, can start to clear the 4 mobs on the ring, clockwise (common sense, since u landed left of the split). sometimes the other players fly all over the place. then u know they are newbies. or worse, they pick the wrong drake for their dungeon role (unless they doing achievement, which i advise, for LFG, not worth the corpse run and repair bill of epic gear).

tip: a lot of players will mount up (either drake or usual mount) after the 2nd mob and run faster to the 3rd mob which is some distance away.

at the 4th mob, there is an island is off the ring. fly on your drake to the island. kill any enemy drakes along the way. ppl dont always fly the safest route and will aggro the pats so dont dismount too quickly, esp if u are dps.

tip: bronze drakes have the best dps. u can help take out the pats but if u are in combat and dismounted, you cannot mount your drake.

kill the mob on the island, fly back to ring (i like to call that the circle line) and continue clockwise to the next island off the ring. the islands are in the 2, 6 and 10 o’clock positions) rinse and repeat.

2nd boss is on the 3rd/last island. he calls a drake to help him. avoid the lightning cloud that moves around the island and oso the laser beam from his drake and it’s basically a tank and spank job.

mount up on drake and fly up (clockwise) to 1st of broken ring segment. there is a broken ring made up of 3 segments. each segment has a mob which appears once tank aggros the boss who ports to the next segment. once all 3 segments are cleared, boss ports to circle in the middle (a little lower than the broken ring)

2 directions to fight. i like to fight, starting by being on the right of the boss. however, it means everyone has to run anticlockwise (which is different from all that we have done so far – clockwise). why need to run? boss will ice the ground he is on, and that will damage anyone on the ice. so once tank is on the boss, he has to keep pulling boss off the ice. since we landed on the right, we have to run anticlockwise around the circle. another thing boss does is port to middle and do aoe. when he ports, all run to get behind cover (pillars) otherwise half ur health or more is gone. that plus ice = dead. so run from ice, hide from aoe, and it is basically tank and spank job.

drake fight. ppl who dont know how to fly and fight, die. but its not hard. even 1st timers can complete this fight successfully and easily.

1st, where to assemble. there are 3 small islands above. and the boss flies within the 3 islands in a circular path (anticlockwise). assemble at the South island (there is a chest on the island. the other 2 dont have chest) chest is impt – it contains the boss loot, and in H, a goodies bag for each player to dismount and loot.

tip: clear any enemies the party has aggroed b4 starting boss fight. sometimes u aggro them but cannot see them (known bug) in which case, sometimes u have to wipe party to clear the bug. else u have to heal thru the extra dmg u are getting. and no one can dismount. once dismount cannot mount again cos u are in combat. always start boss fight with all drakes at max health. less strain on heals.

drake roles

red/ruby is tank: threat and evade. so dps boss and any adds that the group aggroes. uses his evasion power whenever it is on cooldown.

brown/bronze is dps: damage and crowd control. whenever boss enrages, one (not all) bronze should timestop and freeze boss in place. so they need to coordinate among the 3 of them who does the 1st, 2nd timestop and so on. usually 2 timestop needed only. 3 means fail dps. in general, 1 dps channels and the other 2 lances. however, if no coordination, can still generate a lot of dmg and kill boss within 2 timestops.

dps strat tip: usually the one doing the timestop channels. but that is if the plan is to use all 3 timestops over a minute. (cos timestop cooldown is 1 minute). 1st starts timestop and channels for 20 sec. then 2nd timestop and so forth.

green/emerald is heals: dot boss to leech life from boss to self, channel own life to other drakes to heal them. so if heals only heal but never dot boss, he will eventually drain his own life to zero and die. so most heals dot boss 3 times, then start to channel to heal the other drakes. rinse and repeat. keep the dots on the boss up!

starting the fight. all mount on drakes, fly up a bit, close in a bit, and when boss flies closest to the South island, tank begins the fight.

boss has 2 fancy moves. enrage when he hits really hard, and astral plane when he goes immune and sends his minions after the party. timestop his enrage, and fly away when he goes immune. since all at S island, fly away means fly southwards beyond the island and then fly back to original fight position. tank has to go pick up any boss adds.

boss is either downed or u wipe cos healer cannot keep all the drakes up. that will happen if someone’s drake is too far from the group, or tank never protect group from adds, or no timestop when boss enrage.

— the end —-

there, not so hard, izzit? other than the end boss fight, the rest is really a piece of cake. and if u got a good group who understand the basics of the end boss fight. even if new to the dungeon, no problem.

Oculus is the instance just above Nexus. so run towards Nexus, but instead of down the ramp into it, turn left and run along the inside of the complex and then cross the bridge to the portal in the middle. there is a ramp up but that is for Eye of Eternity (raid) instance.

u can mount up and ride to the portal which brings you to the 3 npcs with the drakes. talk to your role’s npc and get the drake. then fly outwards and then upwards (that avoids all flying mobs) to where your party is.

playing wow is a discipline

i think ive stabilised my playing time. i play a reasonable amount and then i stop for the night. and i put other stuff ahead of wow. like cleaning my room or having my meals at the proper time. and watching korean drama serials on dvd.

last night, although i have 2 accounts on wow, i just played 1 account (2 realms, some toons) for LFG for the under 80s. oso ran a bit of H just for the fun of it. did some cooking, first aid. did the usual JC daily and used the daily alchemy transformation. on the 2nd ac, i just did JC and alch. and that was it.

after maintenance tuesday, i will switch over to do LFG for the 2nd account, and so forth. only weekends when i have more time, i run toons on both accounts.

so my main focus is JC and alch cos those are things that need time to get done, else when u need some mats, it just isnt available. then getting my alts to level cap. then after that, maybe some prof/rep/gear stuff for 80s.

and occasionally, join a weekly raid that is simple to clear and gives good rewards.

17th – davina (retadin)

davina is now L80, the best part of it is, i can solo ZF! (Earned the achievement Zul’Farrak for 10 points.) of course, i could have done ZF even earlier but there was no request (i did ZF on davina long before achievements came on, getting the stupid mallet from hinterlands when it was a tough run thru the troll temple). i took 2 guildies with me since they had quests there and it was fun to see the sgt bly fight turn into an aoe orgy. guildie thought there was a bug cos after the 1st aoe, nothing happened for a long time. i told them it was working as intended (ie. scripted fight sequence) and cos we killed the mob by aoe below instead of waiting for them to run up the steps, we have to wait a long time before the next mob forms. so 3 aoes later, with much waiting in between, sgt bly is dead.

yeah, crappy stats right? she ran a H run and only came up with 1.3k dps. and her GS is under 3k so i wont say how much, haha.

i think i have just a couple of L78s left. 2 DKs on blackwater raiders and 1 shammy on firetree. the rest are 79. excluding my 80s.

once i get everyone to L80 (in a week or two at most), i think i will stop and concentrate on a few i wanna gear up properly. i cannot gear all of these last few 80s properly, but i should get a few done up for cat.

opheilia my prot/fury warrior should get more gear both ways. she is fun to play with and will come in useful in cat. she is the alternative to everstone who is prot/arms warrior on the other account.

i oso want to get cavelion geared up cos he was my first priest toon (which i put on hold in wow classic in order to get everstone levelled up and created spiritcat on the other account as my 2nd priest and main toon for the longest time. zappel on jubei’thos only became my main cos of guild migration)

davina, i will level her Sons of Hodir rep so she can make glacial bags. (tailoring currently just nice for the recipe, at L445). the bags will come in just nice for my alts too

timeforfun (holy/shadow priest)needs to get full rep on all factions so that 80s on that account can get the Sons of Hodir shoulder enchants. muzzleshot (hunter) needs to get to L80 so that he can be the farmer (miner and engineer) for that account. will probably have to save money and get epic flying (5k gold).

pyroblast (frost mage) and kiseki (demo lock) are now L79 and most likely to be next 80s on this realm. they already got the spellfire chest and hands made by timeforfun. so they just need to get their hit rating up (probably buy a trinket with EoTs)

the long and winding road

strange. all my alts that i want to take to level cap are L78 and L79. but they have a hard time getting that daily LFG run for the 2 EoTs. even tanks and heals.

maybe ppl are taking a break from WoW until cat. while the rest are contented to just run around with their 80s. H queue for dps around 10 min. quite the norm.

for 80s, i seem to find ppl running the usual VoA when it comes around, or the weekly raid, and the H stuff. i even manage to get into some ToC raids, for Pickwick.

but under 80s, its a long hard slog. maybe i should quest more. but i was hoping for more EoTs b4 hitting 80, so that they can have more epic gear to start their H runs, etc.

tonight i will really put some effort into patiently queuing for them for LFG runs.

opheilia – fury warrior

i once levelled opheilia as fury but that was a long time ago i cant remember much of it. only that the health regen wasnt that fantastic. once in a while i still needed to stop and bandage.

at L80, fury looks a lot better. i guess it comes with better gears. although most of her gear is tanking, it can be used for dps too. just crappy dps XD. after i specced her properly after reading EJ (elitist jerks) on rotation and talents, i took her for a dps H run. she came in last, below the tank, at 1k dps.

in fact, when i first got her going, her dps was only 400-600. then as i got the hang of the spells (i call them all spells), it crept past the 1k mark. basically, without rage, the fury warrior is flat. limited to just white dmg. so i learned to use bloodrage and other rage gen spells whenever they are on CD so that i can spam WW more frequently. i think i need to read more about the spells so that i can put them together more effectively. i tend to use slam when the proc isnt up which makes it a slow cast spell.

on the other hand, i oso respec pickwick according to EJ and kept him demo for the raid buff and FG (for soloing). oso changed his rotation a bit and its amazing how the right rotation can bring his dps up by quite a bit. i took him to the 10man weekly raid – Anub-arak in Naax. his dmg was quite respectable. whereas last week when he ran 25man ToC, his dmg was near the bottom.

so im still learning tons of stuff and having great fun. hope u are too!

opheilia – finally geared enuf for tanking

once i got her def up to 535, i took her tanking. and she’s been ok so far in her runs. i even once got her into a H run as dps (the dps was crap. 700 instead of the minimum 2k!)

after that embarrassing run, i dual spec her Fury. now i have to see if  i got any gear for her to run with that. going to queue as dps for a few H runs tonight just to try it out. but first, gonna read up elitist jerk etc for talent tree and dps rotation.

highlight of her tanking so far: H HoL. 1st boss. actually, she pulled the circle mob, and then went down the ramp to avoid the boss. but the healer (stupid tree) was healing on the circle and didnt move even though i msg party a few times that the boss was coming. so boss was aggroed while he had the lightning buff. i had to use challenging roar to grab the boss and his 2 adds while holding the rest of the current mob we were fighting. lucky the rest of the dps were pros (probably 6k GS types) so we finished off the current mob real quick and downed the 2 boss adds before going for the boss. no one died. healer was great (if a bit blur when it comes to positioning)

damn, i still havent time to gear Fruit for healing. he is still right where he last was. just turned L80 and sitting idle.

timeforfun just got dual spec

i dual spec timeforfun to shadow last night

since he will probably be my main on blackwater raiders, cant just depend on healing to run him to L85. anyway, i need 1 toon on this a/c on this realm to get exalted rep with Sons of Hodir (shoulder enchants) plus he is the tailor so he can make glacial bags at L445.  it’s faster to do rep quests as dps. his healing gear will do for starters. (2k healing or dps, its all the same. just that the set gear buffs are for healing, not dps).

and wow! shadow is cool. u never run out of mana killing stuff. and u take very little dmg. of course, i knew all that already, since i have spiritcat in same config on firetree, haha.

damn, this is gonna slow me down on levelling all my alts to L80.
