levelling post patch 4.3

i play mostly alliance, so i always do it this way:

AZEROTH 1-57
1-5 or higher: race starter zones, until i can get over to stormwind (mage port, guild summon, ride a boat).
then it’s elwynn, westfall, red ridge, duskwood in that sequence. when to move over to the next zone? when the quests go green. always do yellow quests but not higher level quests (too much effort sometimes). after that, the zones are a bit more random. so i go wherever the hero call board recommends, but sticking to the Eastern kingdoms. no fun crossing continent by boat.

first off, i prefer to level with BoA gear that gives xp, and run on rested xp, and to do LFG, questing/farming only to kill time while queuing. cos LFG got group xp bonus. esp if you level a tank or healer and cant do as much dmg until you get dual spec. and i prefer to DS only on hitting level cap (why, so that your 2 sets of action bars are properly configured). so my tank and healer toons usually do very little questing. which is ok for me since i have other alts that provide them the latest and greatest gear (ok, just better than average). if you dont have gear providers, quest more. the gear they reward you is for your level (if you do yellow and not green quests)

why LFG so much?
for getting city rep. buy all the 6 tabards (stormwind, ironforge, gnomeregan, darnassus, exodar, gilneas). and wear a tabard for the LFG runs. the order in which you level the rep depends on your race and where you buy your mount/riding skills. if you buy mount from vendor not of your race, you need exalted rep. the better your rep, the cheaper the mount/training. besides, getting all 6 citiy reps to exalted gives you the ambassador title!

until i have a mount at L20 (and the upgrade to 100% speed at L40), i would base my hearth at the center of my quest zone so that i wont have to run on foot too far. once i have a mount, questing and travel is just so much easier. as a result, i keep the hearth in stormwind. just easier to drop stuff off in the bank or mail stuff, repair gear, train class and profs and do dailies for cooking and fishing

on getting to L68, take the portal to blasted lands and run into outlands. when u queue LFG, you will still get azeroth dungeons until you are L69. still, xp is xp.

OUTLANDS 58-67
- hellfire (58-60)
dont forget to train flying at L60. the faster you can fly, the less ground mobs you aggro. but now you gotta beware of horde city guards that can shoot you down from a flying mount.
- zangarmarsh (61-64)
used to do the sporeggar quests for rep and underbog quests, but now with patch 4.3, quests are inside the instance. if nothing else, do it for cenarion expedition rep.
- nagrand (65-67)
nesingwary quests, and doing rep quests with kurenai and consortium (free crappy gems on getting to Friendly)

cos with LFG and maybe include farming, you wont have too much time to do questing. i usually find myself L65 after the coilfang reservoir dungeon runs (SP and UB). after that, i seem to drop a lot into the CoT dungeon, old hillsbrad (ewww. timed dungeon run, slow thrall mount). i prefer getting the auch dungeons cos if you got a good group, its a fast run

LFG BUG?
if you havent got all your alliance main city rep to exalted yet, you wont complete it while doing LFG in outlands dungeons. regardless what you wear, the outland rep given depends on which dungeon you are doing. eg. hellfire dungeons give honor hold rep.

on getting to L68, take the boat from stormwind to borean tundra. until L69, you will still get outlands dungeons when u queue for LFG

NORTHREND 68-80
on arriving at valiance keep, get your cold weather flying trained
- BT (68-70)
with patch 4.3 dont need to do coldarra quest chains anymore for the Nexus quests, but you can still do it cos its nice and compact
- HF (70-72)
fly all the way over to howling fjord and do the chain quests on scalawag point – it gives u 2 nifty blue trinkets.
after that you have a few options – dragonblight or grizzly hills, but in general, i find that i am already L75 after getting the 2 blue trinkets.
- ZD (73-76)
why not my fave farming zone, SB? cos i dont wanna start on the rep quests, which then makes one part or another of the factions enemies. then farming in that zone becomes a hassle or else is out of bounds. however, if i am levelling a non-farming toon, then SB questing is preferred (cos bored of ZD and also faction rep has nice pets – however, i dont do enuf faction daily quests to get the pets, lol.)
- Storm Peaks (77-78)
gotta do the chain for sons of hodir rep (super pain in the ass) which starts at K3

wearing CATA GEAR in NORTHREND
if you have mains or buy from AH, you can start to be equipped from L77 in cata gear. this makes u awesome in northrend (and top dps in LFG).

- Icecrown (79)
gotta do the chain for ebon blade. actually, no. just to kill time while you level to 80 and get out of northrend!

on getting to L80, say bye bye to old xpacs and into the new!

CATA 80-85
quest or LFG?

  • LFG nets you justice points, which can buy iLvl 378 gear when you hit level cap
  • quests (esp when you complete the end of chain) nets you level appropriate blue gear. and along the way, you get to swap out your old green (or even wrath epics) gear with new green gear! they also give you cata faction rep, which you can buy blue and epic (iLvl 359) gear from the respective factions! also, factions give head and shoulder enchants

do a combo: quest for rep you need for your enchants. and run LFG to accumulate JPs to buy your latest and greatest gear.

- Vashjr or Mt Hyjal (80-81)

- Deepholm (82)

this is compulsory for therazane rep. you may end up skipping Uldum to complete this rep.

- Uldum (83)

- TH (84)

this is compulsory for the new vendors that are opened up only after you have completed the set of starter quests

xense made her own polearm

witch-hunter’s harvester is a BS iLvl 365 item, and that about completes all crafting for xense. the rest of the gear upgrades will be via VPs.

so the 2 alchemist toons i have are now busy doing transmutes of volatile life to others, cos i need the other volatiles for crafting. also need to do a whole lot of elementium mining for Everstone, but i think i will just let him slowly hit 85 via mining, since i dont really have anything lined up once the toons hit 85.

on jubeithos, almost all the toons can queue LFG, except Greeni. so maybe have to wait until she hits 81 and can wear more cata gear.

BoA items – item level of 1

this is working as intended. so when you have been using BoA gear on your toon until you hit L80, you never had any problems queuing for LFG.

all of a sudden, you hit L80, and you cannot queue for nothing. a big fat zero LFG fail. cos your gear now is too low for H wrath and normal cata dungeons.

the official WoW workaround is: take off the BoA gear, equip normal gear then queue LFG.

update 13 June 2011:

as long as u carry the normal gear in your inventory, you can still wear BoA gear and queue LFG. it will take the best item level gear from your equipment and inventory.

i finally managed to queue LFG for Persi when she turned 82 and got enuf Cata gear…

getting another toon to level cap

yup. this time, i am going to focus on xense, my firetree L81 hunter. yup. already L81 without doing much in terms of questing. some instances, some questing, some farming.

gonna get some rep along the way too. so have to do at the very least, the minimum questing for the rep. gonna limit the LFGs but very tempted by the JPs…. hmmmm. oh well, whatever happens, happens.

let’s see how long it will take to get xense to L85 on a casual basis.

rez sickness

resurrection sickness

i want to talk about this, because i think some ppl may have too much fear of using it, or at the other extreme, use it frequently and indiscrimately.

basically, what i want to say is, dont be afraid to use it. the 10 min debuff is not that great a penalty in most cases. you can always sit in a town or city, and do your professions or check out the AH (major city) or just participate in guild/trade chat. or just explore (however, beware that your debuff puts you at risk if you aggro. so it’s better if you do your exploration from air – after L60). or hey, just leave the game on and do something IRL for 10 minutes!

as a general guideline

  • when in a group, rez sickness should be used only when you are not required to participate during the 10 minutes of debuff you get when you take it, or when your participation is not critical (ie dps). otherwise, run back to your corpse, or ask for a rez if there is a rezzer near your corpse.
  • you died from fatigue – even running back to your corpse wont save you from a 2nd fatigue death.
  • cant get back to your corpse because you are exploring a new zone and you’ve tried a couple of times to run back but have no idea how to get to your corpse.

mis-use

  • ppl who enter LFG instance via instant port and have no idea how to run from gy back to instance when they die. so they leave group and take rez sickness. learn to play! go explore the world of warcraft (pun intended)!
  • ppl in party who just take rez sickness and then expect the rest to wait for them to clear the debuff. or worse, continue with the instance/raid and fail to carry their own weight, leading to unnecessary deaths or wipes.
  • ppl who just do it cos it is just so easy, and for the 10 min debuff, they just get to do something else. that is a bad habit. so learn to run back to your corpse, cos that is what ppl do when they are grouped in raid/party.

horror story – classic wow

one of the worst examples i came across in classic wow was when you got a party to maradon. it is a 5-man party instance in desolace, which is already a pretty god-forsaken place. in those days, no instant port via LFG. you gotta spam in LFG channel in a main city to be able to attract like-minded individuals from your server.

“LFG mara princess need tank and 1 dps. can summon” – that meant you already have a healer and 2 dps joined up in party and out of the 3, 2 are at the summoning stone outside the mara instance. the 3rd person is of course, in a main city doing the LFG channel spamming.

once the party formed up, and all got summoned, you’d run into the tunnels of mara, and clear the trash mobs leading up to the instance entrance. now, there are 3 of them actually. orange, purple, and princess were the commonly used terms then.

so when you die, cos those days it was easy to die (no BoA gear, very few blues. virtually no epics), you would need to run back from the gy if the rezzer had died too. at the very least, the rezzer would need to run back. as well as anyone who died out of range of rezzing.

ppl would run around, no idea where the entrance of the mara tunnels are, and even when they found it, have no idea where the instance entrance is. or else ran into the wrong instance and now need ppl to come and escort them over to the correct instance. cos the trash mobs cannot be soloed – you would have to be able to stealth through if you want to get back to the correct instance. after maybe 10 minutes of being lost, they give up, and leave party, and take rez sickness.

the rest of the party is now left with the requirement to all group up at the instance start, and clear out to the summoning stone, while someone hearths back to a main city to restart the LFG channel spamming again.

now, arent you glad those good old days are gone?

sethekk halls – 2 quests

there are 2 quests for SH which you can pick up outside the SH instance. which means you gotta fly there and talk to the npc before you queue LFG or specifically SH. likewise, after the run, to fly back to the npc to turn in quests for blue item rewards.

if you choose to random LFG, good chance you might end up doing CoT’s Old Hillsbrad (young Thrall) instance instead. and what you really really should be doing is SH cos of the 2 quest rewards!

1) Brother against brother

Kill instance 1st boss and free Lakka in a cage.

Reward is a blue neck item.

2) Terokk’s Legacy

Pick up 3 items:

  • Mask is looted off the 1st boss
  • pick up Saga from the floor in the room just before end boss
  • Quill is looted off the end boss

Reward is a blue item, either the Mask (dps leather head), Saga (castor off-hand) or Quill (2h polearm)

levelling in outlands (Terokkar/Nagrand)

now that you are L64, it’s time to visit Auchindon (Terokkar Forest) and Nagrand. by the time you are done with these 2 places, you would have moved on to the next xpac zones, Northrend! (L68 and higher)

questing:

Nagrand will give you enough quests. i like to do ALL the Nesingwary quests (the meats can be used to level cooking skill) in Nagrand, as well as some starter quests from Telaar (if nothing else, just to get the cooking recipes) and the Consortium guys (esp. nice for JCers)

also, if you run instances, pick up the quests that are at Auchindon, just outside the instances. you need to be at the appropriate level in order to get the quests. so start with the Mana Tomb quests.

instancing:

  • Mana Tombs – L64
  • Crypts – L65
  • Sethekk Halls – L67
  • Old Hillsbrad – L67  (not in Auch but CoT, but if you use LFG you will get this randomly)

oh, pick up the FP for Telaar/Nagrand and Allerian Stronghold/Terokkar Forest. and if you get some spirit shards while killing bosses in Auchindon instances when the PVP buff is on the Alliance side, they can be traded for some nice stuff at the stronghold.

missmisty – rushing kalimdor loremaster

but will most likely not make it. since the world as we know it is going to change soon. like on tuesday?

anyway, she didnt make that much headway into the achievement. just cleared teldrassil and darkshore and half of ashenvale. if she really went for it, she’d need a lot more time, cos the travelling back and forth to turn in quests can be quite time consuming.

besides, that, this week is pilgrim bounty, and i have to get cooking up to 300 for the newbies – stormfrost and incorrigible on jubei and sealtle and faultless on khaz. so far, only sealtle has crossed the 300 mark, but there are some cooking quests to complete.

it has been hell to do pilgrim bounty due to interruptions to the main cities from the xpac events. the phase out periods means i cant fly from city to city or conduct any sort of activity in a city during event phases. so whenever a city event starts, i just quit on that toon and work on another realm’s toon.

the only good thing is, discovering all the lowbie quests in kalimdor on missmisty. that was a whole lot of fun. and taking missmisty on her daily LFG (just once a day for the bonus JPs, if i did it all the time, the loremastering will take too long)

cleaning up b4 cat

lately, been doing H runs with a good pal. he logs in with a dps alt and joins one of my tank (2) or healer (3) alts and we queue LFG. we do that for about 2 hrs per night, swapping alts. good for me, good for him. he skips the long dps queue time, and i get badges for my tanks and healers which otherwise i wouldnt (i prefer to play my dps and take the long queue time to do other stuff). then we go off and do our own stuff again. we include other pals if they are online at the same time.

so what do i mean by cleaning up b4 cat?

it’s for prepping my L80s for cat, and it means:

  1. getting the cooking and FA skills up to par. (425). this is completed for toons on BWR. on firetree, magel is now doing the farming of food mats (that is why i dualspec her to be deep frost the week before)
  2. getting everstone exalted with kaluak for the fab fishing pole by doing the 3 dailies for 14 days.
  3. levelling xbowstrike fishing skill to max (he’s already got the fab fish pole – and penguin pet to boot)
  4. using everstone to hatch an oracle egg every 7 days. if its a pet it goes to one of the many alts
  5. level davina tailoring to max by making glacial bags. however, i need to get her exalted with faction to get the pattern first! i think i better get started on it this week. time is running out!
  6. farming ores with pickwick and muzzleshot to make titansteel bars
  7. completing JC dailies and doing transmuting on daily basis to get as many recipes and mats as possible. as they are being used up by the alts that get emblem gear and need epic gems
  8. accumulating as much gold as possible but not doing it specifically.

but what happens when cat arrives?

then i put the majority of my alts in cold storage while i race to the new level cap on (in the order of importance):

  1. zappel and naturespower on jubei’thos for raiding purpose
  2. spiricat and everstone on firetree
  3. timeforfun and xbowstrike on BWR
